Rare Blood Donor Club

The procurement of rare blood types (Rh negative) continues to be a significant challenge for blood services in Thailand. Many patients urgently need rare blood types for treatment, but only about 0.3% of the Thai population has such blood types. This translates to approximately 3 individuals out of every 1,000.

Currently, there are only 6,388 registered rare blood donors across the country, categorized as follows:

Rh-

ALL
6,388 individuals

Group

A Rh-
1,513 individuals

B Rh-
1,913 individuals

O Rh-
2,495 individuals

AB Rh-

This limited pool often results in shortages of rare blood types, which can be critical, as transfusions must come from donors with the same blood type.

Demand for Rh- Blood

To address this pressing need, the National Blood Centre of the Thai Red Cross established the Rare Blood Donor Club (Rh Negative Club) on May 26, 1989.

The club initiated the event “Gathering of the Rh-Negative Family” to provide a platform for rare blood donors to come together, meet, share experiences, and build strong relationships. This fosters a sense of community, unity, and mutual support among members. The club also aims to enhance awareness and understanding of rare blood types, encouraging regular donations. By donating every three months, rare blood donors can help ensure there is sufficient blood supply available for patients in need.

We invite all rare blood donors to contribute and help sustain the lives of fellow patients. Donations can be made at the National Blood Centre on Henri Dunant Road. For appointment scheduling, please contact the Blood Donor Recruitment and Corporate Communication Department at 0 2252 1637 or 08 5149 9089.
