Platelet Donation Process (Single Donor Platelets)

Platelets are a vital component of blood that plays a crucial role in clotting and sealing damaged blood vessels. The normal platelet count in individuals ranges from approximately 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per cubic millimeter of blood (150,000 – 400,000/mm³). Low platelet levels can lead to severe bleeding, necessitating platelet transfusions to prevent such conditions. Platelets are often provided to patients with low or dysfunctional platelet counts, such as those with bone marrow disorders (e.g., aplastic anemia, leukemia, liver disease) or those who have lost a significant number of platelets due to conditions like dengue fever, major surgeries, or postpartum hemorrhage.

Eligibility for Platelet Donation:

  • Gender
Male donors are preferred because female donors may have a higher incidence of complications related to antibodies against white blood cells, which are more commonly found in women. This is an international standard for single-donor platelet donation using plateletpheresis.
  • Health
Donors must be in good health with no disqualifying medical conditions.
  • Age
17 to 60 years (first-time platelet donors must be under 50 and have donated whole blood at least once in the past year).
  • Weight
    Minimum of 50 kg.
  • Platelet Count
Must have a platelet count of at least 200,000 per cubic millimeter before donation, and at least 100,000 after donation (donors will undergo a Complete Blood Count (CBC) prior to donating).
  • Vein Visibility
Clear veins in the arm at the elbow.
  • Medication Restrictions
No aspirin or NSAIDs for at least 48 hours prior to donation. Stop taking turmeric or fish oil at least 72 hours before donating, as they may affect platelet function.

Note: CBC = Complete Blood Count, which measures the concentration and number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Donation Method

Platelet donation can occur every month. The process is conducted using an automated blood component separator (Blood Cell Separator), which collects the platelets while returning other components back to the body. Each donation takes approximately 1-2 hours.
